Donald “Don” E. Sarkel age 84, of Ashland passed away Sunday, August 6, 2017 at the Good Shepherd Nursing and rehabilitation Center.  He was born May 8, 1933 in Ashland, the son of Frank and Ruth (Baker) Sarkel.  Don had been a lifelong resident of Ashland and a 1952 graduate of Ashland High School.  He was an auto mechanic and had been employed with Quality Auto’s for 20 years and later retired from Crest Cleaners.  Don was a veteran of the U.S. Army.  He was a member of the Eagles Club and the American Legion.  He was an avid Bowler and sports fan especially the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Cavaliers, he also enjoyed fishing and golfing.

In 1977 Don married Patricia Ann (Clark) Sarkel who survives.  Also surviving are his children, Terry Sarkel of Georgia, Patrick (Lisa) Sarkel of Ashland, Shannon (Ted) Kyser of Mansfield, Toni Moar of Lexington, Renee Waugaman (Fiancée Michael Barnes) of Ashland; his step children, Barb McFadden of Louisville, Cherie (Don) Britton of Ashland, Judy (Dave) Jones of Arizona, Karen (Dave) Young of Loudonville; his sister, Dixie Bennett of Ashland; along with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren; and great- great grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Betty Sarkel; step son, Stanley Harmon; step son in-law, Tom McFadden; and brother in-law, Bob Bennett.

Graveside services will be held for family and friends at Ashland County Memorial Park on Monday, August 14, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Don Earlenbaugh officiating.  Military Honors will be presented by the Ashland Veterans Honor Guard.  Heyl Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.  The family would like to thank Ohio Health Hospice for the wonderful care and support they gave the family and Don during his final days.  Memorial contributions may be made in Don’s memory to Ohio Health Hospice, 1020 Cricket Lane, Mansfield, OH.
