Gilman Patterson Obituary

Gilman D. Patterson age 99, of Copley, formerly of Ashland, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at his son, Tom’s residence.  He was born in Ashland on March 20, 1920, the son of Donald Patterson and Myrtle (Welty) Grindle.  Mr. Patterson had been a resident of Ashland most all of his life.  He had been employed with Garber Printing and Mets Auto Supply.  Mr. Patterson was a veteran of the U.S. Navy for his service during WWII. In December, 1941 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at Great Lakes, IL.  In October 1942 he was assigned to the U.S.S. Scott, this ship was sunk in November, 1942 in the invasion of North Africa.  He then was assigned to the U.S.S. Swift that went to Plymouth, England and participated in the invasion at Utah Beach during D Day.  He then participated in the invasion of Southern France at Marseilles and Toulouse France. Mr. Patterson was discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1945.  He had been member of the American Legion, V.F.W., Eagles Club, the Knights of Columbus, where he had formerly been Grand Knight and he was a 3rd degree Mason.  He was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword and puzzle books.

On June 29, 1946 Gilman married Florence Ann Wierbicki at St. Edward’s Catholic Church by Father Vincent Jones, Florence preceded him in death in 2013.  Survivors include his children, Thomas (Celeste) Patterson of Copley, Michael (Jill Olson) Patterson of Ft. Myers, FL., Deborah (Kevin) Kemp of Ashland, and Douglas Patterson of Ashland; his grandchildren, Kelly Patterson, Tyler Patterson, Michelle Timmons, Jeremy Biddinger, David Biddinger and Nicole Sengstock; along with his 14 great grandchildren. 

In addition to his wife Florence, Gilman was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Robert, Thomas, Duff, William and Richard.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Edward’s Catholic Church on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. with Father Vincent Hawk officiating.  Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service at the church.  Burial will follow at Ashland Cemetery with Military Honors .  Memorial contributions may be made in Gilman’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 501 St. Jude PL. Memphis, TN. 38105 or to the Shriners Hospital for Children 3229 Burnet Ave. Cincinnati, Ohio 45229.
