Richard "Dick" Ballou Obituary

Richard “Dick” Dean Ballou, age 91 of Ashland, OH., passed away peacefully Monday, December 9, 2019 in the home of his daughter.  Mr. Ballou was born on July 4, 1928 in Sullivan, OH., to Russell and Elsie (Freyman) Ballou.  He was a lifelong resident of Ashland County.

Richard was a founding member of the Ashland Christian Church, which he assisted with construction.  He also attended Grace Brethren Church and was most recently a member of Calvary Baptist Church.  He was  a devout Christian and reader his entire life.  Richard loved baseball and his beloved Cleveland Indians.  He could be seen most weekends in the summer at Brookside Park watching the many softball games.

Richard worked his entire career at Ashland Rubber Mat until his retirement in the early 2000’s.  Richard married Mona Whitcomb in 1948 and surviving is one daughter, Deborah Perkins of Greenwich and three sons, David Ballou of Ashland, Mark (Janna) Ballou of Bellville and Robert Ballou of Fairfax, VA.  Two stepsons Chuck (Brenda) Nell and Ted (Elaine) Nell also survive along with numerous grand children, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.  Richard was married in 1978 to Lucille Koerber Edmiston until her death in 1998.  Richard married Lou Panella Nell in 2000 until her death in 2013.  In addition to his wives, Richard was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Rev. Wilmer Ballou, his son William Ballou and stepdaughters Bobbi Sweet and Peg Schar.

Per Richard’s wishes, there will be no visitation or calling hours.  A private family graveside service will be held at Ashland County Memorial Park .  The family suggests memorial contributions made in Richard’s name be made to the Calvary Baptist Church, 210 N. Davis Road, Ashland, Ohio 44805.
