Alva W. Chapman

Alva Wesley Chapman, of Ashland went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 21, 2020, at the age of 84.
He was born on April 8, 1936, to Arthur Lawrence and Mary Estella (nee Stine} Chapman in Lorain County. Since moving to Ashland at a young age, he has been a life-long resident.
Alva graduated from Ashland High School in 1955 and married the love of his life, Gloria (nee Buzzard), on April 14, 1957. He was drafted into the Army in 1959 and served time in Korea. Alva was employed at F.E. Myers for forty years before retiring. Farming was always a passion of his.
Alva was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Ashland but most recently attended Ashland's Grace Brethren Church. He was also a member of the Moose, Eagles Club, and enjoyed playing golf in the Eagles Club League and on the Tuesday morning Seniors' League.
Golf has always been a huge part of Alva's life. As a young boy, he was a caddie at Ashland Country Club and played in many caddie tournaments. Alva was a member of the Varsity GolfTeam at Ashland High School and placed fourth individually at State his senior year. He has always enjoyed playing golf with his friends and sons, Dave and Tom, but most recently shared a special bond on the golf course with his grandson, Troy. Alva also enjoyed the outdoors, family vacations, but especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren, Troy and Makaree, play sports. He was definitely their number one fan.
Alva is survived by his children Tom (Lori) Chapman of Ashland and Dave (Betty) Chapman of West Salem. He adored his grandchildren Troy and Makaree Chapman, Chris, Brian, and Brandon Curtis, and great grandchildren Emily, Sarah, Riley, Thomas, and Tyler. He is also survived by brother and sister-in-laws Harvey and Fred Buzzard of Ashland, John Buzzard of Bellville, Jackie Shambaugh of Ashland, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Alva was preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Gloria Buzzard, and sister Glorene Shockney.
Friends may visit with family on Wednesday, October 28, 2020, from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M. at Heyl Funeral Home in Ashland. The Funeral service will follow at 7:00 P.M. with Pastor Dan Allan officiating. Burial will be at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, October 29, 2020, at the Ashland County Memorial Park.
