David L. Smith

David L. Smith, age 93, of Ashland, passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at Brethren Care Village Health Care Center. He was born November 8, 1929 in Wayne Co., the son of the late Donald and Bessie (Melcher) Smith. He was a resident of Ashland all of his life and was a graduate of Ashland High School. David had been employed with Myers (Pentair) as a machinist for 26 years before retiring. He also enjoyed working the family farm. He was a member of the First Church of the Brethren and a former member of the American Legion Post # 88. David was a U.S. Air Force Veteran having served during the Korean War. David also enjoyed traveling with his wife Wilma.

On September 25, 1954 David married Wilma (Shafer) Smith who preceded him in death in 2016. Survivors include his daughter, Mindy Barr of Ashland; his grandchildren, Michael (Shannon) Barr and Mallory (Ghalib) Ali; his great grandchildren, Landon, Connor, Sutton, Liana and Sareena; along with his sister, Rose Deck of Tennessee.

In addition to his parents and wife Wilma, David was preceded in death by his son Mark Smith, son Matthew Smith, Son in-law David Barr, brother Paul Smith and sister Jane Stephens.

Funeral services will be held at Heyl Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Tom Snyder officiating. Burial will follow at Ashland County Memorial Park with Military Honors conducted by the Ashland Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in David’s memory to the First Church of the Brethren 122 E. 3rd.
