Diane Margaret (Donaldson) Koons

Diane Margaret Koons, age 76, was born in Lansing, Michigan to Charles and Betty Donaldson. She passed away peacefully in her home in Clifton, VA on Saturday March 7, 2020, due to complications from Dementia. She married Jerry Koons of Ashland, Ohio in August 1990, in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.  

Diane graduated from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill with a Bachelors of Arts degree. She also attained a degree from Cleary Business College, leading to an entrepreneurial career as a free-lance court reporter in both Michigan and Florida. 

After Diane and Jerry retired, they moved to Siesta Key, Florida. Diane loved all animals, nature, and especially the sound of the ocean. She was in charge of the turtle program on a small beach near their condominium. She was licensed to find and mark the nests, expertly counting the eggs and recording all nest activity. They later moved to Shallotte, NC where Diane frequently opened her home to care for her friend’s pets while they were away. Their last move was to Clifton, VA to be closer to family and more medical care.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed entertaining, flowers & gardening, shelling and traveling to Europe, especially the Amalfi Coast and Venice, Italy. Diane and Jerry had a very active travel and social life. 

Diane loved to be surrounded by family and friends. She always had freshly baked cookies ready for her grandchildren’s arrival. She enjoyed taking walks with them and watching them play at the beach. Diane was able to make people feel at home wherever she went.  

She was preceded in death by her parents and first husband, David E. Martin and beloved son, Daniel A. Martin. 

Survivors include her husband, Jerry N. Koons (Clifton, VA); her three sons, David C. (Abby) Martin of Aylette, VA, Darin T. (Pam) Martin of Clifton, VA, Dana A. (Katrina) Martin of Evanston, IL; her two step-sons, Jeffrey N  (Judy Kay) Koons of Ashland, OH, David W. (Beth) Koons of Wadsworth, OH; her 11 grandchildren, Alexa Martin of Aylette, VA, Evan and Lucy Martin of Clifton, VA, Aaron, Rob and Julia Martin of Evanston, IL, McKenna and Ciera Koons of OH, Keeley Koons Rose, Kassidy Koons Uhl and Kristofer Koons of SC, as well as one step-grandson, Billy Williams of AZ.

Funeral services will be held at Heyl Funeral Home on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 10:00 A.M. with Pastor Jeff Coggins officiating, burial will follow at Ashland County Memorial Park.  Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 13, 2020 from 6 to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
