Doris Smith Obituary

Doris L. Smith, age 101, entered eternal rest with her Lord and Savior on May 18, 2020 when she passed away at the Brethren Care Nursing Center.

Born in Appanoose County, Iowa in 1918, she lived most of her life in Ashland County. In 1945, Doris married Owen A. Smith, who was her devoted husband for 62 years until his death in 2007. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Cross.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Patti (John) Steiner of Creston, Ohio; son and daughter- in-law, Dr. Alfred "Fred" (Barbara) Smith of Sarasota, Florida; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Her brother, Dwight (Mabel) Doggett of Apopka, Florida, and sister, Donna Finley of Lexington, Ohio, also survive.

Doris spent 40 years teaching English, Latin, French, and remedial reading at Mansfield City Schools. She had also taught in Springfield Local Schools. She was a member of Park Street Brethren Church where she taught Sunday School and served as a longtime member of the Deacon Board. Her greatest mission in life was to make sure people knew the love of Jesus Christ. She lived and loved generously until her last day, touching the lives of many.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Brethren Care Village for their loving care of Doris for the past 13 years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Park Street Brethren Church.
