Ellen M. (Fry) Bruce

Ellen M. Bruce, 90 of Sullivan, OH., passed away Monday, April 11, 2016 at her residence. She was born September 3, 1925 to Don and Mildred Fry at the family farm on Twp. Rd.791 between Nova and Sullivan. Ellen graduated from Nova Centralized School later known as Mapleton. She attended Oberlin College receiving a Degree in Business Administration. Ellen had been employed as an executive secretary with F.E. Myers for 29 years and served as a Real Estate Agent for 4 years. Ellen married Wm. A. Thorpe in 1945 who was her high school best friend; he preceded her in death in 1973. Ellen, William, and family enjoyed many years boating in Vermillion, Ohio. In 1976, Ellen married Carl M. Bruce who preceded her in death in 2010. They enjoyed camping and were avid fans of the Mapleton Mounties. Ellen’s favorite hobbies were sewing and crafting. She also enjoyed following her great grandchildren’s sports especially basketball. She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 husbands; son, Harry Thorpe; daughter, Barbara Bryant; and grandson J.R. Thorpe. . Ellen is survived by a daughter, Elaine (Jim) Stuart; nieces: Bonnie (Bob) Hagner, Donna (Chuck) Fryman, Carla (Denny) Bates, Sue (Jim) Ellison; grandchildren: Jeff (Jennifer) Stuart, Kim (Kenn) Kaminski, Shelly (Tim) Black, Dan (Molly) Moore, Eric Thorpe, Tatia McManess, Shari Krichbaum, and Shannon Hayes; 17 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held 1:00 PM Monday, April 18, 2016 at Heyl Funeral Home, 227 Broad St., Ashland, OH., with Pastor Janet Chilcote officiating. Interment will be at Ashland Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family 1 hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made in Ellen’s name to Hospice of North Central Ohio.
