Homer D. Leiter

Homer D. Leiter, age 83, of Ashland, passed away Friday, March 17, 2023 at Ohio Health Mansfield Hospital. He was born October 8, 1939 in Ashland, the son of the late Harold and Sadie (Watson) Leiter. Homer had been a lifelong resident of Ashland and was a 1958 graduate of Ashland High School. He had been employed as a Milkman with Smith Dairy, salesman with Home Hardware for 25 years, and most recently a sales associate with Home Depot for 18 years, where he helped open the Ashland store. He was a volunteer firefighter with the City of Ashland for several years. He was a member of the First Church of the Brethren on 3rd St. Homer was a Veteran of the US Army where he served in Korea during the Vietnam era. He was a Life member of the American Legion Post #88, where he was currently serving as 1st Vice Commander and had been Legionnaire of the Year twice. Homer was a people person. He loved seeing and spending time with his grandchildren, great grandchildren and Fur-babies. He enjoyed playing solitaire and his family trips to SeaWorld.

On July 22, 1967 Homer married Darlene Holland- Leiter who survives. Also surviving are his children, Robert (Dianne) Leiter, Tami (Bob) Kanuch, and Betsy (John) Griffith all of Ashland; his grandchildren, Chris Holt, Malia (Steven) Smith, Bradley Leiter, Nick (Erika) Kanuch, Blake (Drue) Kanuch, Arieanne (Cody Stuckman) Kanuch, J.J. (Taylor) Griffith, Alex (Chelsie) Griffith, and Katy Griffith; along with his 12 great grandchildren. Other survivors include his brother, Donald Leiter of Maryland; sisters, Glorene Shenberger of Columbus and Sara (Clayton) Cole of Georgia; and sister in-law, Jean Leiter.

In addition to his parents, Homer was preceded in death by his brothers, Lewis Leiter and Bernard Leiter and twin sister, Marie Overly.

A Celebration of Homer's Life will be held on May 7, 2023 from 1 PM to 3:00 PM at the American Legion on Claremont Ave. in Ashland  "All that knew Dad are invited to come". Interment with Military Honors will be at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. Online condolences may be left for the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Homer's memory to the American Legion, Harry Higgins Post 88, 1338 Claremont Avenue, Ashland, Ohio 44805 to help with veterans programs.
