Jeffery "Jeff" Bates

Jeffrey “Jeff” Dean Bates, age 61, of Ashland, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at his residence. He was born May 14, 1961 in Ashland, the son of Larry “Dean” Bates and Sallie Ann (Fitzgerald) Shank. Jeff had been a resident of Ashland all of his life and was a 1979 graduate of Mapleton High School. Jeff had been employed with Mansfield Correctional Institute where he served as a Lieutenant Correctional Officer for over 20 years before retiring in 2012. Jeff was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the AMVETS. He enjoyed snowmobiling, carpentry and NASCAR racing.

Survivors include his father and step- mother, Dean and Sharon Bates of Ashland; his children, Don (Emily) Bates of Columbus, Adam Bates of Columbus, Brittany (Ross) Ashley of Georgia, and Matthew Bates of Ashland; his sisters, Lori (Curt) Spring of Polk, Karen (Gary VanScyoc) Bates of Jeromesville, and Sharon Bates of Ashland; along with his step- father, Gerald Shank.

Jeff was preceded in death by his mother, Sallie Ann Shank.

There will no services at this time. Heyl Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
