Martha Jane “Janie” Rogers, age 84 of Ontario, formerly of Ashland, passed away Friday, September 8, 2023 at Ontario Estates. She was born August 8, 1939 in Ashland, the daughter of the late Howard and Dorothy (Glenn) Emmons. Janie was a 1957 graduate of Ashland High School and went on to Kent State University to received her Bachelors Degree in Education in 1961. She had taught first grade in the Ontario School system for 37 years before retiring in 1998. She had previously spent the summers working for the Dunkin Jewelry Store. Janie was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church in Mansfield where she taught children’s bible school and played the piano. She was a member of the O.E.A. and had been president of the Ontario’s Teacher’s Association. She had also served on several committees to study and choose education curriculums. Janie was an avid reader and an accomplished pianist. She was a bridge player and bowled on a teacher’s bowling league. Janie loved going to craft shows and listening to Tom Hamilton call games for the Cleveland Indians. She was known around school for many friends, her beautiful handwriting and a ready smile for everyone around her.
In August of 1979 Janie married James “Jim” O. Rogers who survives. Also surviving is her brother, John (Marcella) Emmons; along with a niece and a nephew.
After retirement, she enjoyed helping her husband Jim with his farming business and Auction Business.
Funeral services will be held at Heyl Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow at Ashland Cemetery.
