Mary L. Steward- Aten age 89, of Ashland, passed away Monday, August 17, 2020 at the Good Shepherd Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Hayesville, Ohio on September 8, 1930, the daughter of the late Harley and Minnie (Bender) Steward. Mary graduated LPN Nursing School and worked in the Nursey at MedCentral Hospital in Mansfield for 24 years, she had previously been employed with the Faultless Rubber Co. as a Secretary in the purchasing department for 5 years. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, vegetables and flower gardening, knitting, crocheting, canning, freezing, and cooking. She was known for her stuffed pimento peppers. Jars of her pimentos were given to friends and family at Christmas and Birthdays. She also loved watching birds, reading nonfiction and reading National Geographic magazines. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Before becoming ill she was always giving to others and always caring and sharing. Mary was a member of Christ United Methodist Church.
On June 3, 1950 Mary married William L. Aten who survives. Also surviving are her son, James Aten of Wooster; grandchildren, Stephanie Pooler of Virginia, Derrick Aten of Ashland, and Michael (Sinclair) Aten of Loudonville; four great grandchildren; along with her sisters, Thelma Reep and Vera Witmer.
In addition to her parents Mary was preceded in death by her, son, Samuel on March 5, 2007; brothers, Carl, John, Richard, Howard, and William (Bill) and sisters, Mildred Williams and Margaret VanWinkle.
Funeral services will be held at Heyl Funeral Home on Monday, August 24, 2020 at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Tom Snyder officiating. Burial will follow at Ashland Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service from (12 to 1) at the funeral home. Facial covering and social distancing are required at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Mary’s memory to Kindred Hospice 112 Harcourt Rd. Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050 or to the Christ United Methodist Church 1140 Claremont Ave. Ashland, Ohio 44805. Online condolences may be left for the family.
